Phil Mickelson capped off a tumultuous summer at home with a spectacular rally Sunday to win the Tour Championship but still saw his rival walk off with the bigger pay cheque.
Mickelson won the battle, a three-stroke victory at East Lake to cap an emotional year and earned a $3 million bonus, on top of his $1.35 million for winning the Tour Championship, while Woods won the war, a second-time FedEx Cup champion despite a pitched Sunday afternoon that taxed pocket calculators and prognosticators everywhere.
The world number one claimed a USD10 million bonus as FedEx Cup champion.
Never have they shared the spotlight, each going home with a trophy that was meaningful in its own way.
