Grip it and Rip it - John Daly

"My life is upside-down right now. No matter what I do, it’s wrong. I’m thinking of writing a new song. I’ll call it, ‘I guess it’s my fault, even when it’s not my fault."- John Daly

A song writer, performer, alcoholism, gambler, drug, health, mariages problems - The true color of John Daly. But one thing for sure, he had archeived which most of PGA players have not - 1991 PGA championship and 1995 British Open.

Born in April 28, 1966 in Carmichael, California and move to Arkansas and started to play golf since six years old.

Daly turned professional in 1987, and won the his first ever title at Ben Hogan Utah Classic in 1990. Then he joined the PGA Tour in the following year and he came into attention after won the PGA Championship that particular year. The interesting fact was, he was the ninth and final alternate for the Championship. He entered the competition when Nick Price dropped out and no other alternate could make it.

Daly's golf swing is easily recognized, as he sends the club way "past parallel" to the ground on his backswing, thereby generating tremendous power. His lifetime average for distance off the tee is 309.4 yards, and his single-season personal best is an average of 314.3 yards, which he attained in 2003.Eventhough he can reach very long par 5 holes in two strokes where no one else can, he is also known for having soft hands and a deft touch in his short game around the greens.

Despite his non "country club" appearance and attitude, and his rough-and-tumble personal life, Daly remains one of the most popular and intriguing figures on the Tour, despite his recent lack of success. This video speak it all!!!!

My Game, My World - Camilo Villegas

He is a professional golfer, celebrities, model and a God to Columbian golfer and most importantly Camilo Villegas ( pronounce as Ka-me-low Vee-jay-gaas) is one of the young millionare in today's golf industry. Born in January 1982 and took up the game as a child. Graduate from University of Florida and was player of the year in 2002 and 2004. In 2006 "Golf Digest" named him as " the most ripped player on tour".

He began playing on the PGA Tour in 2004 and earned his PGA Tour card just prior to the 2006 season. He had a blistering start to his 2006 rookie year on tour, with two second place finishes and a third place (at The Player Championship) in his first nine events.

Villegas' tremendous physical power allows him to drive the ball far away from the tee box, averaging 302.1 yards in the 2006 season. He also adapts a homemade putting routine: while he reads a putt, he crouches down parallel to the ground without touching it, extending his left leg back while balancing with his right leg and his putter to get a better view of the slope of the green. He is given the nickname "Hombre AraƱa" (Spiderman) for this posture.

This spiderman was also become the first player in 11 years to win post his two US PGA Tour victories in consecutive starts. Three week after winning the BMW championship, he stormed from 5 stoke behindin final round before beating Sergio in the play off at the USD8.4M Tour Championship.

In 2008 alone he managed to earn USD3.910M for 23 event he played. Quiet awesome for 26 year old columbian who is now staying Jupiter Florida.

Villegas is currently sponsored by the Acushnet Company and plays under the Cobra name. As of June 1, 2008, Villegas plays the following equipment;

Driver: King Cobra L4V 9°

Fairway Woods: King Cobra Speed LD F 3 & 5

Iron: King Cobra Carbon CB #3

Irons: King Cobra Pro CB 4-PW

Wedges: Titleist Vokey Design 54° & 58°

Putter: Scotty Cameron Circa '62 #6

Ball: Titleist Pro V1

I had today tried to adapts his putting routine during my President's Cup golf tournament. My back hurts and my score suck!! I wonder how he managed to do that for 18 consecutive holes!!

These girls are hot!!!.... err... rock!!!

I have to admit that one of the reason I follow LPGA event because of the glamours and their outfit style. Not to mentioned their precession in golf. Look at their skirts, earring and other gear wear they are wearing. it will make you crazy. Please look at Lorena, Anikka, Paula, Pressel, Michele and Natalie.(to named it a few). They are Hot!!!

One thing that you will notice at an LPGA event…style. The players, equipment, and sponsors on the LPGA express themselves much more creatively than the other traditional tours. You will find everything from canary yellow and bright blue staff bags to Bullwinkle head covers. The old guard moved out and the new has moved in allowing a fresh look for all to see.

Most of the trends we have seen for the youngest players are form shorter skirts, fitting clothes and colors on top of colors. The old guard moved out and the new has moved in allowing a fresh look for all to see. Not just stopping with the clothes, but the equipment and the bags that hold them to. Even nowadays, Lorena started to wear daring outfit!!

Jokes.

1) Handicap
A couple of buddies decide to play together for the first time. Mac is an avid golfer and Jimmy is new to the game. On the way to the golf course, Mac ask" By the way, what's your handicap?" Jimmy replies. " i don't have one.. it's more like a permanent disability"

2) Late Arrival
One golfer asked his friend, "Why are you so late in arriving for your tee time?". His friend replied, "Its Sunday. I had to toss a coin between going to church or playing golf." "Yes." continued the friend, " but that still doesn't tell me why you are so late." " Well." said that fellow, "it took over 25 tosses to get it right!"

3)It's called Golf
  • In primitive society, when native tribes beat the ground with club and yelled, it was called witchcraft: today, in civilized society, it called golf
  • The man who takes up golf to get his mind off his work soon takes up work to get his mind off golf.
  • Golf was once a rich man's sport, but now it has millions of poor players.
  • Golf is an expensive way of playing marbles.
  • The secret of good golf is to hit the ball hard, straight and not too often.
  • There are three ways to improve your golf game: take lessons, practice constantly... or start cheating.
  • An amateur golfer is one who addresses the ball twice... once before swinging, and once again, after swinging.
  • Many golfer prefers a golf cart to a caddy because it cannot count, criticize or laugh
  • Golf is a game in which the slowest people in the world are those in front of you, and the fastest are those behind.
  • Golf: A five mile walk punctuated with frequent disappointments.
  • There's no game like golf: you go out with three friends, play eighteen holes, and return with three enemies.
  • Golf got its name because all of the other four letter words were taken

What's in the bag- Tiger Woods

When Tiger won last year Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines GC (actually he won 5 times since 1996), the followings were in his golf bag:

1) Driver - Nike SasQuatch (8.5 degrees)

2) 3 wood - Nike SasQuatch 2 (15 degrees)

3) 5 wood - Nike T40

4) Irons 3 to PW - Nike Forged Blade

5) Wedges - Nike Pro Combo (56 degrees) and Nike Forged (60 degrees)

6) Putter - Scotty Cameron by Titleist by Tiger

7) Golf Ball - Nike One Platinum.

And as he always said in his Nike commercial: " I'm not Nike Athlete. I am a whoever-makes-the-best-equipment-in-the-world-athlete". - sigh.. and I'm still paying RM40.00 to wear Nike golf cap!!!

Quotes on Tiger

I managed to capture lot of thing have been said about the world number one. Here some of it for our fun reading.

“Tiger’s having a 10 years anniversary, is he? Tiger gets old too.” – Jack Nicklaus with regards to Tiger approaching his 10 years anniversary of his first Master victory

“f you look down the list of all the great golfers, they all had strength of mind, resilience, determination and desire. But to win 70 odds time, is a lot of golf tournament to win. There are not too many players who have done that so there’s got to be something special about him. I don’t care whether they are major championship or regular championship, he is trying just hard here in Dubai as he will be at the US Master” – Greg Norman on Tiger Wood.

“Its always nice to beat tiger obviously. It’s the first tournament I have won that he’s been in. He is great players, so of course that give you extra satisfaction to beat him” – Henrik Stenson who outplays Tiger and Ernie in 2007 Dubai Desert Classic in Dubai

"Golf, as we know it, is over. It came to an end on a chamber-of-commerce Sunday evening in Las Vegas when Tiger Woods went for the upgrade: He's not just a promising young Tour pro anymore, he's an era." Gary Van Sickle, Sports Illustrated

"The hip hype that has accompanied Woods's move into the professional ranks is both understandable and regrettable." Larry Dorman, New York Times

"He hit the dimpled white sphere off the tee so high, so far, that for a moment it got lost in the misty, bright blue sky. Then the ball sailed downward, took two bounces to the right of the cup and skirted underground like a field mouse running from a predator." Joe Burris, Boston Globe
"Tiger is the greatest thing that's happened to the tour in a long time. He has brought incredible attention to golf at a time of year when football and the World Series always take precedence. Everything I've heard about him seems to be true.'' Payne Stewart after Tiger's win at the Disney Classic)

"Tiger is like John Daly but with total control. If that's not a scary prospect for the rest of us, I don't know what is." Paul Goydos, PGA tour professional

"There was a time, when Woods first turned professional, when people wondered if he had the game to win an Open, whether he had enough accuracy off the tee, or enough control with his short irons, or enough patience. Those questions have been silenced. Woods can win on any golf course that has tee boxes, fairways and greens." Clifton Brown,NY Time.

Shop 72

This is my second favorite spot to hang out beside kopitiam.. Even though there are no WIFI or other young folks gadget, i still love to be there.

Shop 72 is the pioneer golfs mist in East Coast particularly in Kuantan. Owned by "uncle Ng" who is humble and a very experienced golfer in town. Located in Jalan Teluk Sisek which a few step away from my office.

I had bought my first golf set here and also recommended to my few friends. You will find a lot of golf stuff with good quality and reasonable price. From a tee to custom made golf club. You just named it. it's all here!!! You are also can ask for free advise regarding your game or other golf problem from uncle Ng. He definitely will try to solve your problem with a smile.(Ops...please do not ask him on your relationship problem).

Nowadays, at least 5 golf shop has been in the market in Kuantan, but i think most of Kuantan golfers surely agree that Shop 72 is the coolest golf shop ever in East Coast and particularly in Kuantan.

How far your driver distance from tee?

During my earlier days in golf, i only managed to hit as far as 175 meters using my Taylormade R7 driver. Most of senior golfer told me to be patient." Don't worry about the distance, it will come naturally". WTF!! until now, after 4 years, i still hitting below 200 meters!! My 9 iron just went around 90 meters. no wonder i found it too difficult to GIR in two stroke. Luckily my short game is awesome.
People said, there is no specific distance in golf stroke every golfer has a different golf swing speed. But, for those golfer that play regular flex golf clubs (swing speed between 75-85 mph), the average lengths of golf clubs are considered normal. One article mentioned that there is usually an 8-12 yard difference per club at the normal swing speed with standard lofted clubs. For 3 iron -190, 4-180, 5-170, 6-160, 7-150, 8-140, 9-130, PW -115, GW-100, SW-80, LW-60. You must also take into account that all golf clubs are not lofted the same. Those days, the average pitching wedge was 48 degrees of loft. At the moment, I'm using Callaway Big Bertha PW´s that are 53 and Cleveland SW 44 degrees. My distance still suck!!! Luckily Malaysian golf course are not like PGA standard course. Just imagine I need to hit 495 yard par 4 at Home of Golf?? Sure at least double bogey!!!

After halfway breaks, we continue with our second nine and my golf game was pretty awesome. i managed to maintained my score with 42 strokes. Total gross 84 strokes!!!! Yes!!! today i played as 12 handicappers!!!The interesting parts i was i just only did 24 puts!!!!

The secret?- Make it easy!!! and don't push yourself.....

( i wonder why i cant get this kind of score during club championship tournament...sigh..)
